Stella Awinja Hall: UoN

This building is named after one of the most dynamic students to ever walk through the University of Nairobi, Stella Awinja Muka. She was a Third Year student of engineering, successful actress, poet, among others.

Stella was crushed to death by boulders falling from the construction of Lilian Towers on University Way as she waited to cross the Road into the Engineering Faculty at University of Nairobi. She was awarded a posthumous (aegrotat) degree in 1984 by the University of Nairobi.

The UoN bought the Mary Hall in 1977 from the Nairobi City Council. It was aptly renamed it Stella Awinja Hall in 1990 in recognition of Stella’s contribution to the society despite her untimely death. An Award at the National Drama Festival was also initiated in her memory.

Stella acted in many plays among them John Ruganda, “The Floods”, Francis Imbuga’s “The Successor”, Wole Soyinka’s “Music Without Tears”, etc. Today the Museum of Kenyan Architecture Honours this legendary heroine.

Stella performed alongside many Kenya theatre greats, e.g. Hawi Odingo, Wakanyote Njuguna, Oluoch Obura, Joshua Emesu, Louise Kaigwa, Waigwa Wachira, among others.

Stella was studying Electrical Engineering at a time when there were virtually no girls studying Engineering in Kenya. She remains “A Heroine of All Times” as the UoN publication “Varsity Focus” correctly declared.

Awinja had been admitted to undertake studies in Medicine but switched to Electrical Engineering which she felt would give her ample time to engage in theatre, poetry + music. The National Theatre, Education Theatre and Faculty of Eng. are in the same location.
Due to numerous requests, the Museum of Kenyan Architecture will change its profile picture today to celebrate this wonderful Kenyan Legend. R.I.P Stella Awinja Muka.
