Safaricom's 5G

5G is here and it’s going to be one hell of a ride

Safaricom 5G is a paper launch. Outside of the guests invited to the launch, I’m yet to meet anyone who has connected to 5G. They should’ve at least provided a 5G router that is available to consumers within the range of the 5G signal.

Shida ni 5G phones aren’t available in the budget segment currently. I think this year when more phones under 20K get 5G ndio tutaanza kuona benefits vizuri.

Kuna xiaomi 9T going for 17K

in my whole life I have never been on a network that does 10mbps in real life

What’s with the skeptism here, whoever came up with 5G is not a fool, for Safaricom to take it up, they ain’t fools neither. This 1G Motorolla “Brick” down here cost in today’s currency Usd10,000/ 1 million Ksh. If you told guys back then about 4G and your xiaomi snapdragons they’d have slapped you.
So take a chill pill and watch the technology unfold instead of criticizing it.

For 25k utapata Xiaomi Redmi note 9 5G

Very good phone but that price is still high for the majority of Kenyans IMO, Most Kenyans budget yao ya simu ni less than 15K.

5G itakuwa campaign slogan ya watu wengine 2022

It’s actually true. It is known as carrier aggregation. Safaricom only aggregates 2 bands (band 5 and 20 to give 4G+). A true 4G network must have around 150Mbps downloads. Anything else is known as Long Term Evolution (LTE) towards 4G. There are many things involved in achieving true 4G, including quadrature amplitude modulation (saf uses 64-QAM instead of 256-QAM) and Mu MIMO antennas in your device.

Basically, only safaricom almost has true 4G, but I don’t think they are motivated to invest in all that infrastructure because it doesn’t sound as cool as “5G.”

So basically they ain’t interested in bettering 4G when 5G is almost with us,but forgetting not so many of us own5G supported phones

Actually its band 3 not 5. When in CBD Safaricom uses band 3 for 4G when in places distances away from CBD Safaricom uses band 20 for 4G connectivity.

Airtel and Telkom both use band 20 for 4G connectivity while Faiba uses band 28 (the most sought after band due to its ability to penetrate even in places where connectivity is usually a problem i.e car parks).

Sorry, yeah, it’s band 3 not 5. Its LTE-A/4G+ is CA_3A-20A (B3+B20) with a maximum aggregated bandwidth of 40MHz.

Stuff changed late last year, Telkom and Airtel have started to deploy 2100Mhz(Band 1) and Band 3(1800Mhz). I use an app called Netmonster to check on the bands.

Airtel also has band 1, faiba has band 3 but it only works in cbd

Informative. Very insightful.
