The ever-smiling TV girl was appointed to the role by Sports Cabinet Secretary Amb. Amina Mohammed, to temporarily replace the disbanded FKF officials led by president Nick Mwendwa and Chief Executive Barry Otieno.

Besieged President of the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Nick Mwendwa, on Thursday, November 11, responded to Sports Cabinet Secretary (CS) Amina Mohamed’s order to disband his team.

Speaking at La Mada Hotel in Nairobi, Mwendwa stated that he had no plans whatsoever to relinquish his position as the in-charge of football in the country.

He stated that he and his colleagues planned to defy the CS’ order on their removal. He added that they would not recognise the 15-member caretaker committee appointed today.

“As FKF, we reject this committee. We rebuke it, and we will not accept it. No committee will take charge of Harambee Stars. FKF will be in charge,” the ousted manager stated.

He insisted that the Sports CS had no capacity to disband the body given that they had been elected. As such, Mwendwa said that he and the committee would continue serving until the world football governing body, FIFA, gives its statement on the same.

The FKF President termed the move by the CS as unlawful, arguing that the CS should not have assumed the role of judge by concluding they had acted inappropriately.

“We have not been tried nor found guilty before any court of law,” he stated.

Mwendwa revealed that the disbandment of the federation did not come as a surprise owing to recent friction between Amina and the body. The FKF boss accused the CS of trying to micro-manage football in the country.

When asked about a possible absence from office to allow investigations, he rubbished the idea.

“We shall continue with football. If anyone wants to come in between, let them come, and we will see what happens,” he remarked.

Amina disbanded the federation after receiving a report on the investigations into the massive fraud reported at the body. She also appointed a caretaker committee to lead FKF.

Embattled Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President, Nick Mwendwa, has been arrested.

According to sources, Mwendwa was picked by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) at the Safari Park hotel on the afternoon of Friday, November 12. The FKF boss had gone to the hotel to pay a courtesy call to the Harambee Stars team that had just jetted in from Kampala, Uganda. Mwendwa was taken to DCI Headquarters along Kiambu Road for questioning.

The FKF President, according to a source who spoke to Kenyans.co.ke, was arrested in relation to the ongoing probe on financial impropriety at the body. Mwendwa is facing accusations of abuse of office, mismanaging the federation and misuse of taxpayers’ money.

Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Caretaker Committee has suspended all football activities across the country with immediate effect.

Justice Aaron Ringera-led the caretaker committee, through a press statement, released Friday, November 12, stated that all top-tier football activities will be suspended with immediate effect. This follows a deliberation made by the committee after their appointment into office by Cabinet Secretary for Sports, Amina Mohamed.

The decision is part of the clean-up exercise to streamline activities at the scandal-ridden FKF that was disbanded on Thursday, November 11.

The suspended activities include the FKF Premier League, FKF National Super League, FKF Division One, FKF Women’s Premier League, and FKF Women’s Division 1 League.

The Committee is expected to engage with the clubs and other football stakeholders before making further recommendations.
However, leagues running under the branches and sub-branches will continue as normal.
“We wish to reassure all lovers of Kenyan football that the committee will ensure smooth operations of all football activities across the country and beyond,” the committee noted.
The committee was tasked with conducting all the affairs of FKF in accordance with its constitution, coordinating and ensuring the smooth running of FKF’s operations including team preparations of all local and international sporting events, coordinating elections of FKF in accordance with the Sports Act, and the Sports Registrar’s regulations and then Hand over FKF to the newly elected officials after a successful election.
They took over from Nick Mwendwa-led committee has was shown the door. The report handed to Amina stated that Mwendwa’s team had failed to account for funds and the beneficiaries.
“Over the past few years, the Football Kenya Federation has faced several governance issues that have been of great concern to the Ministry. First, the Football Kenya Federation has failed to account for all the monies allocated to it by the Government,” the statement read in part.

Mwendwa, on his part, maintained his ground terming the appointments made by the CS as unlawful. Speaking at the La Mada Hotel on Thursday, November 11, Mwendwa stated he has no plans to relinquish his position.
“As FKF, we reject this committee. We rebuke it, and we will not accept it. No committee will take charge of Harambee Stars. FKF will be in charge,” the ousted manager stated.
The International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) has also threatened to apply sanctions to Kenya terming the decision by CS Amina as a contravention of the body’s rules and regulations.

Update:

Fifa has expressed concerns over a move by the government to disband Football Kenya Federation (FKF) and install a caretaker committee to manage the game on an interim basis.

A letter by Kenny Jean Marie, Fifa’s Head of member associations, addressed to embattled FKF general secretary Barry Otieno has, however, appeared to indicate the sport’s world governing body is ready to mediate an impasse between Sports Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed and FKF officials, led by Nick Mwendwa.

“We would like to express our concern in light of the aforementioned decision by the Cabinet Secretary,” the letter says.

“Therefore we kindly ask you to inform the Cabinet Secretary that in the event her decision to appoint a Caretaker Committee and the correlated secretariat was to be upheld, we will have no option other than present the matter to the Bureau of Fifa Council for consideration and decision.”
“We would like to emphasize our willingness to hold a meeting with the FKF and Ministry of Sport as soon as possible.”
Mohamed disbanded FKF on Thursday, hours after an inspection committee she had tasked with conducting an inspection of the federation reported several misgivings with the football body.
She has appointed a 15-member committee to handle football matters in the interim pending fresh elections.
Mwendwa and his team have since been barred from accessing the federation’s Kandanda House secretariat in Nairobi.
