NEON GENESIS EVANGELION

Went into this with low expectations and was pleasantly surprised. For a show about teenagers piloting giant robots to fight powerful aliens it was pretty fucking deep. Touching on themes of depression, abuse, faith, love, betrayal, manipulation, religion, the nature of man’s soul and a whole bunch of other dense introspective philosophical stuff that probably flew right over my head. The last two episodes were like a vivid psychedelic trip. I don’t even understand the ending but you know what? I’m not mad. Thanks to the guys who recommended it to me in an earlier post.

And of course I can’t forget the most epic anime opening of all time

I don’t even understand the ending

The creator ran out of funding because he blew the animation budget on all the combat scenes so he had to make shit up towards the end, that’s why it’s so trippy and confusing.

U have chosen this… Now its a must u watch these

Then we talk about this mecha life

oya, how did you know there was a “bunch of other dense introspective philosophical stuff that probably flew right over my head.

btw how does this stack to Akira

You really have to watch the show to get it. From around episode 21 onwards shit just gets more and more confusing but in a good way, if that makes any sense. I cannot really compare it to Akira, to me they are telling two completely different stories but if you liked Akira you will definitely like this.

I’m aware of the budget issue. They made End of Evangelion as a conclusion but there’s still a lot of questions left unanswered. Like how come only kids can pilot Evas? What exactly was the Human Instrumentality Project? And who/what the hell is Rei Ayanami?

Human Instrumentality Project was an idea. Merge the consciousness (and subconscious) of every human. Because if all mankind is united there can be no violence, bloodshed, greed etc. This was SEELE’s plan. To create Utopia.

Rei is a clone of Yui.

Only children can pilot Evas because the original Eva Units were possessed by the soul of the pilot’s (dead) mother, also they require someone born after the 2nd Impact to synchronize with the Unit. All the children were born 14-15 years after the 2nd Impact. Except Rei who is just a clone of Yui.

Okay I see. But if the Eva is possessed by the soul of the pilot’s dead mother and Rei is a clone of Shinji’s mother…Who/what is inside Unit 00?

Rei is not just a clone of Yui, part of her is also made up of the 2nd Angel Lilith. Lilith and Yui are therefore her ‘mothers’. The psychic link between them is what pilots Unit 00.

I also found this anime; RE:ZERO to be very interesting in the way they construct and deconstruct the main subject. There was even an episode that just ended without an ending music just the viewer looking at decapitated body of the main character while the credits just roll.

Watching the Evangelion was motivated by the symbolism and mastery of creation in the eyes of many people.
I watched the entire season in 26 episodes in 24 hours. I watched it greedily. Nothing weirder but rational, I hadn’t seen yet. After all, the first half of the anime tells us about ordinary and even trivial things. There was a catastrophe on the Earth, as a result of which polar glaciers melted, the water level rose, buried cities and half of the planet’s population. The disaster was somehow connected with a mysterious creature called the Angel. 15 years later another Angel hit again, but people were ready for it, creating a few giant robots based on their opponent. Only children of 14 years old and one of the pilots can control these robots, our captive hero becomes an ordinary, reserved and silent kid.
In each series nothing special happens, the characters are pretty cute and stuff. The second half consists entirely of internal torments of the protagonists.
Can a man be happy for longer than one moment? No, he can’t. What is the cause of his unhappiness? It’s his destiny. Will we always be so alone? Yes, we always will. And the traumas of the past will never heal? They won’t heal. That’s how the Evangelion goes on. And all this happens against the backdrop of a possible mass disappearance of people. From a carefree action movie anime turns into a dark surrealistic, sometimes even creepy, psychological drama.

You watched it all in one sitting? Damn. I spread it out over a week or so.

Macross Frontier was neat.
