National schools: the nonsense that is Kenyan education system

ATI you set aside some few schools, equip them more than the rest and call them ‘nashono’. Then you have bonobos who went there thinking that they have 2500cc of brain matter while the rest of us have 1500cc. What a warped logic?!

Very warped. Then you create an abnormal demand for it to a point that bribery amongst headteachers for a vacancy become like buying stocks in New York stock exchange.

A colonial relic that has been preserved because the political class enjoy elitism.

I was being told how principals in National and Provincial schools make a killing nowadays na hizo admissions .Wanajenga flats kuliko hata corrupt KRA employees

Those principals are super rich. They possess fancy titles like “Chief Principal”. The teachers and parents of their schools fear them a lot. They make millions of shillings from the dubious procurement deals in the institutions. They are untouchable

The saddest thing is children walking to school at 6 in the morning, Which means waliamka 5. What the fuk is that dystopian shit?

Imagine mtoi anateseka hivo five times a week kusoma alafu analeta 250 - 300 KCPE, how do you explain that? Afadhali home school because more sleep is very important at that age and you won’t rob their childhood

It’s a true definition of hell on earth

Hehe usitulaumu bwana…we went to national schools because we scored very good grades( just before the year 2000). And some of us got those marks despite going through very average primary schools.
A quick question; if your child posts very good grades in kcpe and gets admitted to a national school would you say no?
Mimi I think the gava is to blame…national schools used to belong to Europeans…I understand the school where I went only started admitting Africans and Indians after 1958! The schools were and are still very well equipped, they are miles ahead of most tertiary colleges. Courses like electricity, power mechanics, agric, woodwork, home science or even music were/ are still very superior in those schools because they were properly equipped. Sports kama rugby, hockey, basketball, tennis etc are also very superior there because of the superior facilities and culture…I remember my school held the provincial rugby crown for 15 Straight years…we ended up with the national crown in our 4th form because we had pitches, coaches and support from the school.
I remember writing here how almost 50 students from our year went majuu for bachelors courtesy of sports scholarships either from rugby, hockey or long distance running…they have never looked back! Thanks to old boy networks and ofcourse the school’s name!
So instead of criticising those who went there you better blame your successive governments for neglecting other schools…imagine if former provincial and District schools were properly equipped…we would be producing very good students with good exposure. Shida ni the system wants to maintain the status quo…they want their kids to go to the best schools na wale wa hustlers waende harambee schools…inequality will never end, just make sure your own children go to proper high schools otherwise you are setting them up for a very miserable future. Networks do matter

Quite sensible Mr. Mikaeli. I remember when I was in std 7, two ndongomothis who had repeated class 7 and actually 3yrs older than me said in my hearing that nikiwashinda tena watanunua mafuta ya taa kibuyu ya 5L to enable them read overnight (Hakukuwa na stima). The were not saying this because they were positive about it, it was out of bitterness that wamerudia na nimewabwaga exam ya term 1. so they were mocking me and sending a warning nisijaribu tena…I still showed them dust wakaniheshimu proper. This post by Cibu has reminded me that far. The failures were never happy with the top 5 and I suspect its the same case here

Out of topic, who asked you?

Mwangi Kinunuho

The whole point is all schools should be made equal. You went on a whole tirade on how you and your kind think you are better all because you went to some high school. @ChifuMbitika ndio hawa watu wa kujiona 2500 cc.

True dat. My point has already been vindicated

Actually two points…First point is was to show why national schools are better …this is backed with overwhelming evidence then a final conclusion of what should be done to even the field…am used to writing reports so utasamehea mimi

Kenyan education does not determine success or failure.

Watu wa A work for watu wa C

National schools score better just because of the better pool of students they get over other schools. Facilities is a factor but a very minor factor. Other ‘factors’ like leakage are stori za jaba.

If facilities were the main thing, Lenana School would always have been the number 1. It was the best equipped boys public school in my day. Yet poor facility Mang’u was better academic wise. Ditto Limuru Girls vs all those girls mission schools.

So if we are to make all schools equal, we do away with this pooling of bright boys & girls in some few elite schools. That will fix the inequality even before we fix facilities. But then, we still would need some facilities’ equalization programme.

Well it’s not really true that ALL national schools belonged to white kids. Even the old ones like Maseno, Mang’u, Loreto Limuru, Maryhill, Alliance, were started by missionaries. The likes of Nairobi Sch, Kenya High and Limuru Girls were whites only schools.

But you make a good point on choice of school choice for our kids/relas. Everyone with bile with national schools would be happy to have their child admitted.

Very interesting.
Kubaki tried to remedy this by establishing centers of excellence in regions. Selected schools got three million to improve infrastructure but walikula. If this was done every year to different schools saa him we would be having at least three schools in every county.

This reminds me, Garba Tulla High school was well established and was a national school at one point but our bonobo cushites messed everything the same way they did to Garissa university
