It's all part of the African self-image problem. Africans customarily want to do things the hard, painful (but not necessarily effective) way, to feel like men. If we go by your reasoning, no land transactions will ever take place! The problem with your prescription is using a very small sample to make conclusions. People have sold such land to pay fees and eventually made it. Others have sold to build rentals and now they have steady income, something that idle land could not give.
