Azimio Leader Raila Odinga on Monday, March 27, gained access to some estates within Nairobi despite heavy police presence in residential estates.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7jcFQzrqvs8

At 1.30 p.m, Odinga’s procession left Lavington and made its way to Kawangware, where he addressed Azimio supporters and made several stops.

The former Premier’s close confidant Prof Makau Mutua shared a video from inside Odinga’s vehicle, which revealed how well-coordinated Raila’s command unit was to ensure that he holds mass protests.

In the clip shared by Prof Mutua, he rode along with Odinga in his vehicle. Seated in the co-drivers seat was one of Odinga’s bodyguards who was constantly speaking on his walkie-talkie.

One of the alerts he received was information on the situation in Dagoretti as the procession made its way to Kawangware.

“I am in Dagoretti and the thing is turning to stage two. You are supposed to reach stage two in 20 minutes,” the voice on the other end of the walkie-talkie.

Upon inquiry by Mutua, the bodyguard confirmed to him that they had broken through a barrier after certain cars ‘had to be removed.’

The male voice on the other end went ahead to provide directions on how the Azimio party leader would gain entry to the Central Business District.

“From Kangemi, he may use the Expressway to enter the town,” the voice stated. The bodyguard responded, “just go slow if you have already opened because we have the protestors with us.”

However, Odinga and Mutua quickly interjected, insisting that his protestors should not be left behind.

In response to the clip, ICT Chief Administrative Secretary Dennis Itumbi claimed that the clip proved that Odinga had infiltrated the police communication channel.

“Our agents are reporting that Raila has Police communication radio and the operations had been compromised…They are able to move and act based on police communication. We have shared the information with the police for necessary action” Itumbi stated.

Social media was awash on Monday, March 27, with reports of Opposition Leader Raila Odinga’s daughter, Winnie Odinga, being detained at Lang’ata police station.

The speculations went rife that Winnie’s vehicle was left behind Raila’s motorcade with police officers allegedly firing shots at the car.

Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, ODM’s Director of Communications, Philip Etale, disregarded the reports and confirmed that she was safe.

He added that Winnie’s vehicle was left behind from the procession as it has a minor breakdown. Etale, however, noted that the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) MP was on her way home.

“I’ve spoken to her and she is safe. She is heading home at the moment,” Etale confirmed.

Other reports indicated that Winnie Odinga’s car was bombarded by police officers and her driver was arrested. The reports elicited debate among Kenyans online who wondered why such steps would be taken on Winnie Odinga or her driver.

“Why such drastic action towards an individual who was not posing any threat?” Communication strategist, Pauline Njoroge posed.

“Teargassing a traveling vehicle without any provocation proved henceforth. It is very similar to Magufuli’s tenure and one should note how it ended,” read some of the comments.

A fire broke out at Northlands City Project - a property owned by the family of former President Uhuru Kenyatta- on the evening of Tuesday, March 27.

The fire was reported to have started minutes after 7 pm with images of the property circulating on social media.

From the images, the fire engulfed part of the forest located on the property along the Eastern Bypass.

Notably, the incident happened hours after the property was attacked by goons who cut down trees and took away an unknown number of cattle.

The cause of the fire and the value of damages is yet to be established.

By the time of publication, firefighters were yet to get to the scene. Police were also not at the scene when the fire broke out.

Earlier in the day, goons raided the property with a number of them filmed cutting down trees and stealing sheep. The armed goons also destroyed the fence of the property.

Following the incident, Azimio la Umoja leader Raila Odinga condemned the attack even as he also addressed the raid that was carried out on his company - the East Africa Spectre Limited by unknown individuals.

Raila’s gas company is located along Mombasa Road.

“Today, those cowards sent goons to Uhuru’s farm in Ruiru and other people to East Africa Spectre. Those are acts of criminals,” he stated.

Azimio leaders also called on the police to take action against the orchestrators of the loot even as a section of Kenya Kwanza leaders claimed that the attacks were allegedly planned by Azimio.

“The attacks against Northlands & EA Specter Ltd were sponsored for public sympathy,” Kericho Senator Samson Cherargei claimed.

The Kenyatta family is yet to formally issue a statement on the raid and the fire on their property.

The High Court on Monday, March 27, declined to stop Azimio la Umoja’s demonstrations.

While issuing the ruling, Justice Hedwig Ong’undi stated that the court did not have the authority to force police to ensure peaceful processions and assembly.

The petition was filed by former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko, days before the countrywide mass action kicked off on March 20.

“It would therefore not be proper for these courts to appear to be setting out new regulations and policies which is not within its docket,” Justice Ong’undi stated.

High Court further declined to issue orders to Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome to arrest the demonstrators noting that it did not have the authority to direct the Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki on who to arrest.

“It would therefore not be proper for these courts to appear to be setting out new regulations and policies which is not within its docket,” added the judge.

On the matter of the illegality of the declaration of public holidays by the Azimio leader Raila Odinga, the court stated that the Interior CS and the Inspector General of the police would direct on the way forward.

Former Nyeri Town Member of Parliament Ngunjiri Wambugu on Monday, March 27, weighed in on the invasion of Northlands City - owned by the Kenyatta family along Nairobi Eastern Bypass.

In a statement, Wambugu condemned the attack, noting that it would create a recipe for disaster whereby unknown persons would storm someone’s property without notice.

He added that this would drive a wedge among Kenyans based on the rich and the poor. According to the former lawmaker, the wealthy family would go to great lengths in acquiring volunteers to protect their farms as opposed to relying on the government.

"Whoever came up with the idea of having people invade the land of Kenya’s Founding Father and the First President Jomo Kenyatta, in a world that’s connected everywhere via the Internet, has done Kenya a lot of harm today…At this rate, what will stop a rich family from inviting young men and women to volunteer to protect their property if it becomes clear that their government will not protect them? Isn’t this how private militias are formed?" he posed.

Wambugu noted that invading the Kenyatta family’s property set the stage for another person’s property to be raided.

Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, political and Governance expert, Dr. Jane Thuo, echoed Wambugu’s sentiments and opined that the invasion seemingly opened Pandora’s box.

“It’s a very unfortunate situation because everyone has their own supporters. This resembles someone throwing stones at a glass house.
…This also mirrors the situation of the haves and have-nots whereby the effects will trickle down to the community. This will mean people will be paying for their own security based on a community level,”
she stated.

The political analyst opined that the Kenya Kwanza administration ought to consider dialogue in a bid to restore peace to the country.

“When you come to power, you have the greatest responsibility, the buck stops with you. So, in an economy like this, you end up breeding desperados ( helpless people who have nothing to lose)…This is beyond politics. It might drive a wedge between neighbors, and families.
So let’s not take it lightly. When they start like this, what’s to stop them from attacking other people’s properties?”
Thuo posed.

Kenyatta’s Northlands project, estimated to be worth Ksh500 billion, comprises an 11,000-acre parcel of land in Ruiru.

CCTV footage captured a group of youth staging an attack on Raila Odinga’s gas plant in the Industrial Area, Nairobi on Monday, March 27.

In the clip released by East African Spectre Limited, the group of 10 men assembled at the firm’s main entrance and posed as bystanders.

When the road and human traffic in the area was reduced, they began collecting stones in the vicinity and hurled them at the main entrance.

They not only targeted the windows of the security guards but also the main building in the facility. One of the protestors nearly got struck by a rock he threw after it bounced off the gate.

For one minute, they continuously pelted stones in broad daylight. Motorists and pedestrians using the section of the road avoided any confrontation with them.

Some of the faces of the vandals were captured on camera after the caps of the hoodie they dressed in to conceal their identity fell off.

However, they did not gain access to the facility. The youths then left the scene on foot while two of them used a getaway motorcycle.

More footage revealed that several cars parked in the compound were damaged. A number of windows on the main block were also shattered.

What Joe Biden’s envoy told Raila, Gachagua
Friday, March 31, 2023
By Justus Ochieng’ & Roselyne Obala

Opposition leader Raila Odinga stuck to his guns in a meeting with a United States delegation seeking a truce, as it emerged Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua flatly rejected any overtures to have him join the government.

US Senator Chris Coons (left) meets Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua in Nairobi on March 29, 2023.

While Mr Gachagua demanded that Mr Odinga stops the protests and agrees to discuss his permanent retirement from politics before the talks, the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition leader wants the government to accede to discussing what his camp has now crystallized as its four key, non-negotiable demands.

The four Azimio demands are the reduction of the high cost of living, the opening of last year’s presidential election servers for audit, stopping the unilateral reconstitution of the electoral commission and respecting multi-party democracy to allow all parties to flourish without the government enticing opposition legislators to its side.

And while Mr Odinga’s team is said to be free to discuss the details of how the four key issues will be resolved, they are unflinchingly unwilling to take any of them off the table, in case of any talks.
Mr Gachagua, too, ruled out any deal in the form of the 2018 ‘Handshake’ Mr Odinga had with former President Uhuru Kenyatta, in which the former prime minister secured government posts for his allies, although he did not benefit himself.
US officials led by Delaware Senator Chris Coons — credited for playing a part in the Odinga-Kenyatta 2018 Handshake — and US ambassador Meg Whitman met Mr Gachagua on Wednesday morning before meeting Mr Odinga in the evening.
They were yesterday scheduled to meet Mr Kenyatta and President William Ruto, who arrived back in the country early yesterday.
It is unclear if the two meetings happened, or are still scheduled to happen.

“We presented our four irreducible demands that are in the public arena. He took them and said the country should remain peaceful and we told him that our demonstrators will continue to be peaceful as we press for our demands,” Azimio coalition’s spokesperson Prof Makau Mutua told the Nation yesterday.

In the meeting, Mr Odinga reportedly warned US President Joe Biden’s government against any efforts to back what he termed as the emergence of a “fascist state” in the country.

Fascist state
A fascist state refers to a regime that stands for a centralized autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader, severe economic and social regimentation and forcible suppression of opposition. Prof Mutua disclosed that Mr Odinga expressed his disappointment with the leading democracies and their response to the Kenyan situation.
“We are very concerned about what appears to us to be complicity with the Ruto regime,” Prof Mutua said.
The Azimio team, Prof Mutua said, pressed for what he said was “more robust engagement by Western embassies, especially the United States, to press the government to respect the rights of Kenyans and to respond to the emerging fascist state in Kenya.”
He also revealed that Mr Odinga expressed his concerns about the Western nations’ “silence over the government’s crackdown on peaceful demonstrations, their silence on the invasion of private property with the complicity of the State, especially the Northlands property of the former Head of State and his (Mr Odinga’s) Spectre International Ltd.”

“Their silence is deafening, and I would say that what concerns us most is not what our enemies do or say but the silence of our friends. They have been our friends for many years, but now their behavior makes us believe they are aiding and abetting a regime that is sliding into a republic of fear,” added Prof Mutua.
Mr Coons, Prof Mutua noted, did not make any demands to the opposition, but “supported the right to protest within the constitutional framework.” But other sources said the US officials expressed concerns the protests were ruining the economy and needed to be called off as a good gesture.
Mr Gachagua, speaking in Mombasa yesterday, maintained his hardline stance, insisting that he had told Mr Coons’s delegation and the Catholic Church —after a meeting bishops had with Mr Odinga on Wednesday afternoon — that a Handshake was not on the table.
“We have told our international partners and church leaders that we are willing to sit down with Raila Odinga, but not to discuss his forcible entry into government. We cannot violate the Constitution; it has no provision to facilitate Raila Odinga to enter into government through the backdoor,” said Mr Gachagua in Mombasa yesterday.

“The only way to get into government is through the ballot. Raila has gotten away too many times through such threats. Unfortunately for Raila, President Ruto and I do not buy fear. Come to the table where we will only discuss one thing — your retirement and permanent exit from politics.”

In the meetings with Mr Odinga, Senator Coons is reported to have expressed concerns over what the current political state had done to the country’s economy and appealed to the Azimio leadership to call off the protests.
Following what it sees as a concluded election, the US, according to the Nation, feels the current stalemate is getting in the way of the country’s big economic leap.
And yesterday, Ms Whitman, in a speech during the American Chamber of Commerce Regional Business Summit being held in Nairobi, said Kenya was the best business place.
“I arrived in Kenya days before the August 9, 2022 elections. What I witnessed is nothing short of remarkable. Kenya held what many analysts and commentators call the freest, fairest and most credible election in Kenyan history,” the US ambassador told the American investors and businesspeople in a Nairobi hotel. The group was also addressed by President Ruto yesterday.
