There’s something that I feel is high time we talked about, and that’s the issue of investing, particularly for those Kenyans living in the US. There’s a fallacy which I hope is fading away, some sort of euphoria which had gripped us about buying land and/or apartments in Kenya. Many land companies were formed trying to lure US Kenyans into parting with their hard earned dollars in exchange for a piece of earth in some god forsaken, dusty town. But at what cost? Talk to any diasporans here and you’re bound to hear horror stories how they were conned, even by family members.
Guys, I’ve done my research and the verdict is clear. When I compare how my stock portfolio has performed these last few years with the kenyan **** I bought I wanna cry. My only regret is not investing more into the US stock market. Wadau ebu we stop this madness of thinking that burotis and rentals are the end-all, be-all of everything. The NYSE is where it’s at!!! And with the Feds printing money like it’s going out of style, where do you think all those trillions $$ are going to end up? Wall Street. I think America will lead the post-pandemic global recovery. It’s coming.
I respectfully disagree. If you pick a winning stock like buying $10k AMZN stock in 2004 or Netflix, Tesla and many others it’s actually very easy to become a dollar multimillionaire. We always ask, how do the rich get richer? Duh! The stock market. Personally I wanted to play safe so I leaned more towards ETFs. Even those have done really well, I’m talking an average growth of 56% p.a. There’s one stock I bought (RH) after my Zack’s advisor suggested it last year. I bought it at $154, it’s now over $600. Do the math. There’s no rental in kenya which has that rate of return. Anyway I’m just trying to educate and elevate you all ndio tuepuke umaskini pamoja.
One should invest in what they understand without being greedy. Kama unaelewa stocks basi weka pesa zako hapo, kama wewe ni mtu wa biashara pia weka pesa zako hapo. Wacha kufuata chenye wengine wanafanya, hiyo ndio greed and you either get conned or get poor returns.
Real estate grows value when infrastructure is developed around it, usually by government e.g road. Pia it can grow value in irregular ways e.g. pesa ya zoomalia na ya KEMSA.
Watu wa diaspora don’t know where barabara itajengwa na ndio maana they get the least value after brokers ndani ya serkal wamesafisha sahani. Pia pesa ya zoomalia na KEMSA imeharibu value ya land. Mtu anaelewa hizi atakuwa sawa real estate ya Kenya, otherwise cheza kwako.
Investing ni tricky just work with what you understand well also take care not to be conned by the conmen within us who give you advice which they themselves have never done
Hapana, imagine sio tricky. Do your own research or if you’re really stuck, buy whatever Warren Buffett is buying. All that info is out there and the guy pretty much always beats the S&P index.
Yes although theres a bull run in the stock market. Definitely investing in real estate in Kenya is very risky, more so for diasporans. But investing in stock should only be a small part of your portfolio if you are an amateur or for a very long time. Hold for decades is what Warren Buffet advices. Last year financial gurus ( eg Suzie Orman) predicted fortunes will be made because the pandemic heavily discounted stock prices.
