The wife of Derek Chauvin, the Minneapolis police officer who is charged with murder in the death of George Floyd, is now filing for divorce, according to her attorneys.

“This evening, I spoke with Kellie Chauvin and her family. She is devastated by Mr. Floyd’s death and her utmost sympathy lies with his family, with his loved ones and with everyone who is grieving this tragedy. She has filed for dissolution of her marriage to Derek Chauvin,” the Sekula Law Office said in a statement Friday night. “While Ms. Chauvin has no children from her current marriage, she respectfully requests that her children, her elder parents, and her extended family be given safety and privacy during this difficult time.”

Chauvin was arrested and charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter in the death of Floyd on Friday. More arrests and charges are anticipated, according to Hennepin County Attorney Michael Freeman.

George Floyd, a black man whose death Monday sparked ongoing protests and Derek Chauvin, identified by local media as the officer who was videotaped kneeling on Floyd’s neck for minutes shortly before his death, worked at the same nightclub near Minneapolis’ Third Precinct for a whole year and may have had overlapping shifts, according to the club’s owner, though it’s unclear if the two men knew each other.

KEY FACTS
Maya Santamaria owned El Nuevo Rodeo Club in Minneapolis’ south side until selling it just months ago, and confirmed to local media outlets that both Floyd and Chauvin worked security at the establishment.
Chauvin served as the club’s off-duty officer for nearly 17 years, while Floyd worked there for roughly a year in 2019 and did security for around a dozen events, Santamaria told the Associated Press.
Santamaria told ABC5 that she does not know if the two ever spoke, because Chauvin worked outside the club while security guards, like Floyd, worked inside, but did confirm both men worked at the establishment for the whole of 2019.
If the two men had crossed paths during their time at the nightclub, “it would probably not have been something they remembered,” Santamaria told The Star Tribune, partly because there were often several dozen people working security on popular music nights.
Chauvin “sometimes had a real short fuse,” Santamaria told ABC5. “He seemed afraid when there was an altercation. He always resorted to pulling out his mace and pepper spraying everyone right away, even when I felt it was unwarranted.”
Andrea Jenkins, vice president of Minneapolis City Council, told MSNBC the two men worked at the restaurant together for 17 years, and that Chauvin knew Floyd—but Santamaria’s account contradicts Jenkins’ statement, and Floyd reportedly only moved to Minneapolis around 2014, according to friends of Floyd.

El Nuevo Rodeo Club, where Chauvin and Floyd both worked, is just down the street from Minneapolis’ Third Precinct and the Target store targeted by protesters over the past several days. After she sold the club, Santamaria still ran La Raza 95.7 FM, a Spanish-language radio station, out of the same building the club is located in. The building has burned down, La Raza 95.7 FM told followers Friday.

What does she have to do with someone doing more than 15 years in prison?
