Drive by Wire

Yesterday a friend was driving my vehicle and I noticed something. People who are used to driving vehicles with mechanical linkage for throttle and break response who then get to drive newer vehicles have different sensory responses when it comes to how much force they put on the foot. It gets worse if these people are used to driving stick shift or heavy commercial like Meria.

The description ‘heavy foot’ applies here and it has nothing to do with the need for speed.

For a modern vehicle, one only needs a little dabbing of the gas and break pedal. When slowing down, for example, lightly placing your foot on the brake or letting go of the gas prompts the car to slow down. In the former, the car slows down faster and the downshift (AT) is much smoother. The latter is engine breaking, a technique that increases your brake life but one does feel the stepwise downshift as the engine slows down.

Different cars, transmission systems (DSG, CVT, MT, AT) have varying responses as the system relies on electronic or electromagnetic pulses from the pedals. The sophistication of the system can be distinct and you’ll notice that in basic vehicles, there’s always a lag in response time compared to the instantaneous response in higher end/sporty vehicles.

My bad kusuggest ndai za flinstones, ulipata gari electronic ziko road already.
when i say jalopies sisemi mukebe aiseh, get that straight. Bila proper trimmings on the door frame,ANY car will sound awful. Gari ni kama bibi, ukiichunga itakuchunga hata siku za uzeeni and the good part ni ikikwama kwa haiwei, you can “see” whats up:D
