There’s an anti-black bias in many cultures but it seems most pervasive in Asian culture. When I was young I kept no prisoners. I responded to disrespect with a swift fist. This got me into trouble several times. I’ve been put in a cell twice for responding to racism with violence, and I ended up in a hospital once. There’s this one time in Moscow I knew the literal meaning of running for your life. A mob of skinheads shouted a racial slur at me and I responded with two middle fingers directed at them. As I got older/more experienced/started engaging the mind more, I realised this aggression was counterproductive. I also realised that Africans, we have a gift. We are naturally warm and welcoming and we radiate a charm. While caucasians are aloof, asians are guarded and arabs are arrogant (sorry for the stereotypes) Africans are naturally welcoming. I decided to just be African.
I decided to just be African. Warm, open, radiant, quietly confident in my own strengths. The results were phenomenal. The most efficient way of responding to racial bias is by how you carry yourself. By being that which shatters their fanciful myth to pieces.
