Are some churches laundering money?

We all know the church is exempt from taxation. They also have no obligation to announce their income and expenses to the public, or even their congregation. It seems some people have realized this gap and collude with church leadership to “donate”, “give offering” or “tithe” large amounts of dirty money that is later invested legally in business as part of church revenues.

How do you explain a church affiliated company investing 2.8 billion within a few years of operation.
The said church is frequented by politicians.

Here is the story.
Five top officials of a church in Roysambu, Jesus Winners Ministry, are set to be the new owners of Uchumi’s multibillion-shilling Kasarani land.
The private limited company at the centre of the Sh2.8 billion transaction, Jewel Complex Limited, is majority owned by Edward Mwai Kiongo, also a leader at the church.
Jewel Complex Limited was registered on May 23 last year.

Shareholders of the firm include Edward Mwai Kiongo who holds 36.36 percent stake, Paul Gichohi Mutune with 9.09 per cent ownership while Agnes Wanjiku Kiongo, Raphael Mwiti Thiaru and James Kiongo Mwai all hold 18.18 per cent shares each.
Jesus Winners Ministry is a popular church among the political elite.
It hosted President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto for prayers during their last church service, two days before the August 8 election.
The church also hosted President Kenyatta on June 30 2013, about two months after he assumed power.

Sadaka ya wakubwa

The church is a wealthy organisation. Check on assets of Mormon church and Catholic church utashangaa, this is peanuts.

The Mormon church and catholic has been there for centuries hence accumulation of assets over the time, this Roysambu church is not more than 15 years old

You are out of context

which context?

Poloticians dry fry us bila lube every day of the week, we run to our churches seeking ‘‘His mercies’’ only to be raped further recieving massive facials each Sunday in an all too familiar cycle.

This language should not be used in relation to church pls

You can’t compare a tiny 10yr old church with probably less than 5 branches with a behemoth that ruled Europe for hundreds of years with branches in every village in the world.
Use a church of similar size and character for comparison

You are a fool if at all you think the church is with you. Ushawahi enda kanisa na kshs.100 ukarudi nyumbani na Kshs.150? hiyo si dry fry bila lube na ukamaliziwa na facial ama cam in mouth?

The most expensive thing isnt money, it is the things money cant buy, peace, love, health, long life, righteous children na mengineo mengi. Ukifanya cost benefit analysis there is always a column for intangible benefits.

Like which one RCCG? Have you seen their buildings? Or Nairobi Pentecoastal - do you know how many assets they own? Even the value of the land their churches stand is mindblowing. What of ile ya FEM where it cost over a billion to build. Uchumi is peanuts churches wako na mali, its only that they dont fault it and their returns are not public.

Umbwa

Fools and their money

I think he mentioned its peanuts compared to the other big churches, I assume the point was to show that churches control way bigger assets.
That said, that church was in existence in the late 90’s, I remember it somewhere huko Zimmerman, but a church if it has many members and a well connected leader can quickly have access to a lot of cash, through donations.

true, somethings people fail to realize is that, some people go to church for other forms of fulfillment and what they give is commensurate or even less than what they receive.

Anyway point is churches have cash and power…But some churches are very well established and therefore are very wealthy…newer churches also have some cash…but not upto the point of top leadership buying billion shilling properties…something doesn’t add up and if at all newer and smaller churches can raise such amounts in less than 5-10years then the state has no option but tax their commercial ventures.

The heading is a rhetorical question

Again, the church has been around for how long???The Pentecostal Church is decades old.

A church is a very ingenious method to launder money. Consider how easy it is to move cash through a church, the bank won’t question much. I have seen churches where the pastor or his assistants are peasants but the elder are very rich. These elders were very protective and would not allow ordinary congregation members to join the finance committee.
