Mercedes obviously lead from the start with Hamilton holding P1 for the entire race from his teammate up until the final two laps when some late drama unfolded. Both Benzes suffered front tire punctures forcing the Number 2 Mercedes to pit for a new set on the last lap. The Finn then lost ten positions following his pit-stop to finish the race with no points at 12th.
Hamilton held out and limped to the end of the race with just three working tires. But all along, he lost a lot of time which allowed the Red Bull of Max Verstappen to catch up only missing the 6-time Champion by 5 seconds. He was still able to grab an extra Championship point from his fastest lap.
That was not the only tragedy of the race, however. Two crashes from Kevin Magnussen (Haas) and Daniil Kvyat (Alpha Tauri) crashed out early and didn’t complete the race. Carlos Sainz (McLaren) also suffered a puncture and dropped down the order from 4th to 13th.
Alex Albon (Red Bull) had issues during qualifying and started the race 12th, alongside Pierre Gasly, his predecessor at Red Bull. Blamed for the incident with Magnussen on Lap 1, he was served with a 5-sec penalty and forced to drop down the order. But his superior ride allowed him to claw back finishing ahead of Vettel (Ferrari), who has had a dismal start to the 2020 season.
Both Racing Points (Pink Mercedes) failed to hold their momentum after successful opening rounds in Austria and Hungary. Sergio Perez didn’t start the race after testing positive for COVID-19 and Lance Stroll came home in 9th. Perez’s replacement didn’t start the race as his car, for some reason, didn’t start.

Those Pirelli tyres were shit. Anyway, they added some late drama to what would have been another comfortable, dull Mercedes win. As Hamilton was finishing his last lap you could just see Max’s Redbull tearing through the corner. Hamilton was very lucky.

from the look of things, other teams will have to wait until hamilton retires for them to claim any title

That could take another five years. Hamilton is so mentally and physically focused that he could be a top performer even at 40. Mercedes are also a very well-oiled machine. Redbull’s dreams of making Max the youngest world champion are getting dashed. But from 2021 hapo the field will be more level because of the new budget cap regulations.

This from 2019 was Epic!!
